Orogenic goldAu

Type
Orogenic gold (Archaean greenstone belt)

Laverton greenstone belt (north-eastern Eastern Goldfields Province, Yilgarn Craton), greenschist-facies metamorphism. Orogenic gold dated at about 2.65 Ga across the district (hydrothermal monazite and xenotime, SHRIMP U-Pb), unrelated in age to nearby granitoids: a single fluid from a deep, distal source according to the authors; regional fluid calculated at 300 °C at δ13C -3.9 ‰ and δ18O +5.8 ‰. Mine operated by Placer Dome in the 1990s, 33 km south-southwest of Laverton, pre-mining reserve of 14.08 t Au. Pillowed tholeiitic basalts, ultramafic rocks and aplitic porphyry dykes, alongside the Barnicoat shear zone (over 75 km); gold at the apex of a basalt wedge, in quartz veins with quartz-sericite-albite-carbonate-pyrite haloes in basalt and quartz-carbonate-fuchsite-pyrite in ultramafic rocks. Indicative coordinates, derived from the distance to Laverton.
