Orogenic goldAu

Type
Orogenic gold (Archaean greenstone belt)

Laverton greenstone belt (north-eastern Eastern Goldfields Province, Yilgarn Craton), greenschist-facies metamorphism. Orogenic gold dated at about 2.65 Ga across the district (hydrothermal monazite and xenotime, SHRIMP U-Pb), unrelated in age to nearby granitoids: a single fluid from a deep, distal source according to the authors; regional fluid calculated at 300 °C at δ13C -3.9 ‰ and δ18O +5.8 ‰. Hematite-quartz-carbonate altered syenite stock, with quartz-pyrite-galena-gold veins; monazite and xenotime dated at 2657 ± 21 Ma. Negative sulphide δ34S (pyrite down to -2.0 ‰, galena down to -9.8 ‰), ascribed to the oxidised state of the host rock. Coordinates from Mindat.

Standard : V-CDT

ValueRangenMineral or matrixSource
−0.5 ± 1.42 ‰−2 / 0.9 ‰4pyrite of quartz-pyrite-galena-gold veins in syenite
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 4 analyses, samples BS24 and BS26; oxidised hematite-bearing host rock.

−7.75 ± 2.9 ‰−9.8 / −5.7 ‰2galena of quartz-pyrite-galena-gold veins in syenite
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 2 analyses, samples BS24 and BS25, the lowest values of the belt.

Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 2 analyses, BS24 in syenite, BS25 in a basalt breccia; only two of four samples contained enough carbonate.
