Lateritic profile on basalt, northern Hainan

Northern Hainan Island, China

Soils

Type
Soil

Lateritic profile about 6 m deep on Neogene tholeiitic basalt (K-Ar 4.05 ± 0.33 Ma), under a humid tropical climate (25 C, 1500 mm/yr); red laterite at the top, yellow material at about 2.5 to 3.2 m, brown soil with less weathered core stones below; secondary minerals: kaolinite, halloysite, gibbsite, Fe oxyhydroxides (Ma et al., 2007). He et al. (2022): light Ti accumulates above 3 m, heavy Ti leaves with fluids (Rayleigh-type fractionation); ilmenite resists and carries light Ti. Coordinates published as "110° 38 71 E, 19° 34 74 N", read here as decimal minutes.
