Wilton wetland complex, Kickapoo River floodplain, unglaciated region of Wisconsin: alluvium less than 5 m thick on Cambrian sandstone (87Sr/86Sr 0.71283), bluffs capped by Ordovician carbonates (0.70906). Regional discharge area with strong upward gradients. Coordinates of the village of Wilton, indicative. Agricultural field excavated in 1991 (3.8 ha) to compensate for a road, covered with 15 cm of marsh surface salvaged on site and elsewhere. Site F2 receives ground water like the natural wetland; at site F1, set too high, recent rain dominates the root zone.

F1 and F2 profiles, September 1992 (δ87Sr -2.35 to +1.24 ‰): Ordovician minerals control the composition; the transplanted peat only marks the uppermost point, cation exchange in the underlying alluvium prevails.
