Pasvik valley and Sør-Varanger (Nikel and Zapolyarny fallout)

Finnmark, Norway

Soils

Type
Soil

Boreal forest exposed for more than 70 years to emissions from the Russian smelters. Sites 4 and 5 (Svanvik) near the smelter, north-east transect to Karpdalen (site 15) downwind, site 6 the farthest to the north-west. Snow and PM10 from January-March 2015, soils, mosses and bedrock from August 2015. Coordinates of Svanvik (site 5).

δ60Ni in ‰ (per mil) Values of the same system

Standard : NIST SRM 986

ValueRangenMineral or matrixSource
1.68 ± 0.04 ‰1.65 / 1.71 ‰2topsoil (most contaminated layer)
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 2 values. Sites 4 and 5, the most contaminated: clearly heavier than the smelter materials, which the authors attribute to preferential uptake of light nickel by plants and microorganisms in these organic-rich soils.
Šillerová et al. (2017), Stable isotope tracing of Ni and Cu pollution in North-East Norw…
0.79 / 1.12 ‰snow, lichens and topsoils
Range of most snow, lichen and soil samples, which overlaps the smelter materials; all environmental and bedrock samples: -0.01 to +1.71 ‰.
Šillerová et al. (2017), Stable isotope tracing of Ni and Cu pollution in North-East Norw…
0.22 / 0.49 ‰bedrock (whole rock)
Bedrock, lighter than the surface samples: soil nickel comes mainly from the smelters.
Šillerová et al. (2017), Stable isotope tracing of Ni and Cu pollution in North-East Norw…
−0.05 / 0.79 ‰4PM10
PM10 from Svanvik and Karpdalen, January and March 2015: each filter covers one month and depends on the prevailing wind.

δ65Cu in ‰ (per mil) Values of the same system

Standard : ERM-AE633

ValueRangenMineral or matrixSource
−1.25 ± 0.24 ‰−1.49 / −1.02 ‰3topsoil (most contaminated layer)
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 3 values. Sites 4, 5 and 15, those accumulating most copper: the closest to the smelter materials.
Šillerová et al. (2017), Stable isotope tracing of Ni and Cu pollution in North-East Norw…
−3.94 ± 0.3 ‰1topsoil (most contaminated layer)
Site 6, the farthest: close to the bedrock.
Šillerová et al. (2017), Stable isotope tracing of Ni and Cu pollution in North-East Norw…
−3.52 / −3.04 ‰bedrock (whole rock)
Bedrock, the lightest copper of the study.
Šillerová et al. (2017), Stable isotope tracing of Ni and Cu pollution in North-East Norw…
−3.05 / −2.42 ‰4PM10
PM10, between the smelter materials and the bedrock.
Šillerová et al. (2017), Stable isotope tracing of Ni and Cu pollution in North-East Norw…
−0.35 / −0.06 ‰lichens
Lichens (Hypogymnia physodes), the heaviest copper: biogeochemical fractionation rather than a distinct source according to the authors.
Šillerová et al. (2017), Stable isotope tracing of Ni and Cu pollution in North-East Norw…
−1.07 / −0.24 ‰snow
Snow from January-March 2015.
