Soils
- Type
- Soil
2 m profile of a poorly drained Histic Andosol less than 10,000 years old, 200 m inland, on about 3 Ma basalt; volcanic glass, allophane and ferrihydrite, two tephra layers (50 and 115 cm). Waters sampled with suction cups in June and July 2002; coordinates from the article map.
δ30Si in ‰ (per mil) Values of the same system
Standard : NBS 28
| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| −0.73 ± 0.17 ‰ | −0.91 / −0.53 ‰ | 6 | soil (bulk) Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 6 samples. Soils from 17 to 150 cm (soils 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12): lighter than basalt (-0.29 ‰); soil δ30Si increases with Si content, mixing between basalt and light secondary minerals. | Pogge von Strandmann et al. (2012), Lithium, magnesium and silicon isotope behaviour acco… |
| 0.49 ± 0.38 ‰ | 0.13 / 1.03 ‰ | 7 | soil pore water Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 7 samples. July 2002 waters from 17 to 205 cm (02G 006 to 012), not corrected for precipitation: δ30Si increasing with depth, linked to cation fluxes and secondary mineral formation. | Pogge von Strandmann et al. (2012), Lithium, magnesium and silicon isotope behaviour acco… |
δ7Li in ‰ (per mil) Values of the same system
Standard : L-SVEC
| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7.5 ± 8.5 ‰ | −1.15 / 26.75 ‰ | 11 | soil (bulk) Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 11 samples. Eleven horizons from 5 to 150 cm (replicates averaged); most between 2 and 3.5 ‰, lighter than basalt. Heavy values (up to 26.8 ‰, 113 cm tephra) would reflect sea salts; the minimum (-1.1 ‰, 95 cm tephra) the destabilisation of secondary minerals. | Pogge von Strandmann et al. (2012), Lithium, magnesium and silicon isotope behaviour acco… |
| 7.4 ± 2.8 ‰ | 1.8 / 10 ‰ | 12 | soil pore water (precipitation-corrected) Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 12 samples. Twelve June and July 2002 waters, precipitation-corrected (raw values 7.4 to 21.4 ‰): preferential 6Li adsorption onto allophane and ferrihydrite; minima at the tephra level (113 cm) go with the highest lithium contents. | Pogge von Strandmann et al. (2012), Lithium, magnesium and silicon isotope behaviour acco… |
