Ferrihydrite

A very poorly crystalline iron(III) oxyhydroxide that precipitates quickly in oxygenated waters. Its large surface area makes it a major trap for arsenic, antimony and metals.

Composition

Approximate formula Fe5HO8·4H2O, often written Fe(OH)3; 2-line and 6-line varieties.
