Topsoils of the Linhuan coal district

Linhuan, south-west of Huaibei, Anhui, China

Type
Soil

Linhuan coal district (Huaibei coalfield), intensively mined with coking plant, power plant and coal preparation plant; coal gangue and fly ash dumps. Twenty soils near the mines and industrial park, zinc from 95 to 327 mg/kg, above the risk threshold (200 mg/kg) for 60 % of them. Light zinc mainly comes from fine particles of the dumps dispersed by wind (67 % on average, up to 96 % near the main dump). A nearby street dust gives -0.57 ‰. Indicative coordinates.

Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 20 samples, Table 1. δ66Zn correlated with zinc content (R2 = 0.76). The published δ68Zn has the opposite sign to δ66Zn (for example -0.60 and +0.73 ‰ for S14), which contradicts mass-dependent fractionation: the δ66Zn sign, consistent throughout the text, is kept.
