Zavar (Zvar Habaqbuq, Wadi Paran)
Central Negev, Paran fault (Menuha ridge), Israël
OtherFe
- Type
- Fault-controlled hydrothermal iron lenses and stockworks
Ferruginous lenses and iron oxide vein stockworks along major faults, in the Late Cretaceous, in Judea Group carbonates; hematite, goethite, hematitic jasperoids, with calcite, dolomite, minor gypsum and barite. Prospected by the Geological Survey of Israel; ore averaging 80 % Fe2O3. Ore of smelting experiment EXP-1. Brauns et al. (2020): the three Negev ores share the same 187Os/188Os (1.03 to 1.07) but very different Os contents.

| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0582 ± 0.014 | 1.0437 / 1.0717 | 3 | iron ore (hematite and goethite) Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 3 analyses, 1.0437 to 1.0717 (IP-49 1.0437; IP-21 1.0717; IP-22 1.0591). Os: IP-49 183 ppt; IP-21 179 ppt; IP-22 138 ppt. | Brauns et al. (2020), Osmium isotope analysis as an innovative tool for provenancing anci… |
| 1.0497 | 1 | ore roasted in a wood fire before smelting Single analysis (F.EXP-1-50). Os: F.EXP-1-50 157 ppt. | Brauns et al. (2020), Osmium isotope analysis as an innovative tool for provenancing anci… | |
| 1.0475 ± 0.0021 | 1.046 / 1.049 | 2 | bloomery iron (bloom and forged bar) from this ore, experimental smelt Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 2 analyses, 1.0460 to 1.0490 (F.EXP-1-40 1.0460; F.EXP-1-43 1.0490). Os: F.EXP-1-40 950 ppt; F.EXP-1-43 1104 ppt. Os enriched in the metal (4 to 28 times the ore) with no change in 187Os/188Os: the ratio carries over from ore to iron, which allows ancient iron to be tied to its ore. | Brauns et al. First-smelt tap slags lower (0.74 to 0.95), attributed to Os from the furnace kaolin clay (19 ppt, 0.5869); charcoal at 3 ppt and 0.3595. | Brauns et al.
