Stora Sahavaara

Norrbotten, Kaunisvaara belt (Pajala), Sweden

SkarnsFe

Type
Skarn iron ore (magnetite)

Largest skarn iron ore of the Kaunisvaara belt, 16 km north-north-west of Pajala, in graphitic schists, marls and quartzites; 0.6 to 0.8 % graphite in the ore. Volcano-sedimentary iron ore of the Lapponian Greenstone group (2.0 to 2.5 Ga), metamorphosed during the Svecokarelian orogeny. The widely scattered δ34S and disequilibrium between sulfides indicate bacterial reduction of seawater sulfate. Indicative coordinates.
