Rosh Pinah

Karas, edge of the Namib Desert (20 km north of the Orange River), Namibia

SEDEXZn-Pb (Cu, Ba)

Type
Neoproterozoic stratiform sedimentary-exhalative Zn-Pb

740 Ma disseminated to massive sulphides (sphalerite, pyrite, galena, minor chalcopyrite) in silicified black shales, As-bearing feldspars and altered carbonates of the Rosh Pinah Formation (Hilda Subgroup, Port Nolloth Group), with Ba enrichment (barite) (Alchin et al., 2005). Underground mine operating since 1969, about 700,000 t/yr at 7.9 % Zn, 1.7 % Pb and 0.1 % Cu; flotation tailings stored in a 60 ha dam 1.5 km south of the plant. Milled flotation tailings with a mean ε205Tl of +6.2, taken as an approximate reference for mineralisation Tl (Grösslová et al., 2018). Indicative coordinates (Rosh Pinah settlement, after Wikipedia).

Standard : NIST SRM 997

ValueRangenMineral or matrixSource
6.21 ± 0.16 ε6.1 / 6.32 ε2flotation tailings (milled ore without thermal or chemical treatment)
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 2 analyses, FW1 (13.0 mg/kg Tl) and FW2 (26.5 mg/kg); ± 0.7 ε (2 SD) on each value; Tl mostly held by pyrite, sphalerite and muscovite-illite (over 80 % in the oxidisable fraction); approximate reference for mineralisation Tl, ore and silico-carbonate gangue mixed.
