Renison (Renison Bell)

Dundas region, western Tasmania, Australia

Other hydrothermalSn (W, Cu)

Type
Stratabound carbonate-replacement tin deposit with veins

World-class tin deposit: massive pyrrhotite-cassiterite bodies replacing three Late Neoproterozoic dolomite horizons (Success Creek Group, Crimson Creek Formation), fed by the Federal-Bassett Fault above the Renison granite, a reduced, fractionated S-type granite emplaced at about 390 Ma at 2 to 4 km depth. Pyrite, magnetite and chalcopyrite are heavier than at Xinqiao, a deposit of similar temperature related to a more oxidised, less differentiated magma (Wawryk and Foden, 2015). Indicative coordinates.

ValueRangenMineral or matrixSource
0.9 ± 0.19 ‰0.61 / 1.14 ‰7pyrite (main sulfide stage)
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 7 samples, Table 1; δ57Fe from +0.89 to +1.59 ‰ in the same table. The heaviest mineral of the deposit, together with arsenopyrite and magnetite.

−0.36 ± 0.15 ‰−0.72 / −0.09 ‰17pyrrhotite (main sulfide stage)
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 17 samples, Table 1; δ57Fe from -1.00 to -0.15 ‰ in the same table. The text states 16 analyses; the table gives 18, of which the 17 from the main sulfide stage are kept here (RB023, pyrrhotite from altered dolomite of the oxide-silicate stage, δ56Fe -0.02 ‰, is excluded). The article's text layer drops minus signs: values re-read from the image.

0.7 ± 0.09 ‰0.57 / 0.8 ‰7arsenopyrite (main sulfide stage)
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 7 samples, Table 1; δ57Fe from +0.85 to +1.19 ‰ in the same table. The text gives +1.11 ‰ as the δ57Fe maximum; the table lists 1.19 for RB024.

0.6 ± 0.14 ‰0.5 / 0.7 ‰2magnetite (oxide-silicate stage, altered dolomite)
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 2 samples, Table 1; δ57Fe from +1.00 to +1.01 ‰ in the same table.

0 ± 0.04 ‰−0.04 / 0.04 ‰3siderite (dolomite alteration and fault ore)
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 3 samples, Table 1; δ57Fe from -0.07 to +0.05 ‰ in the same table. Close, according to the authors, to a skarn carbonate published by Dideriksen et al. (2006).

0.23 ± 0.05 ‰0.18 / 0.27 ‰4fresh Renison granite (whole rock)
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 4 samples, Table 1; δ57Fe from +0.27 to +0.43 ‰ in the same table. Like the heavy felsic granites of Poitrasson and Freydier (2005); heavier than the Jitou quartz monzodiorite (Xinqiao).

0.25 ± 0.05 ‰0.21 / 0.31 ‰3greisenised or tourmalinised Pine Hill granite (whole rock)
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 3 samples, Table 1; δ57Fe from +0.32 to +0.45 ‰ in the same table. Alteration with no clear effect on iron compared with the fresh granite.
