Yancey County pegmatites (Spruce Pine district)

North Carolina, Yancey County, United States

Magmatic (Ni-Cu-PGE, carbonatites)mica, feldspath (U)

Type
Granitic pegmatite with uraninite

Lower Palaeozoic pegmatites cutting Precambrian mica and amphibole gneisses and schists (Brost, 1962, cited by Balboni et al., 2016); sample Yancey1 from an unidentified mine, Th- and REE-rich uraninite. Uraninite 87Sr/86Sr measured by Balboni et al. (2016) for nuclear forensics: low ratios (below 0.7200) in low-temperature sandstone deposits, high in pegmatites, veins and breccia pipes. Indicative coordinates (Burnsville, county seat).
