Marjajärvi (Marjarova)

Norrbotten (Pajala), Sweden

Banded iron formationsFe

Type
Quartz-banded iron ore

Layered magnetite-skarn quartzite, in a garnet phyllite with quartzitic layers, graphitic phyllites and dolomitic limestones. Volcano-sedimentary iron ore of the Lapponian Greenstone group (2.0 to 2.5 Ga), metamorphosed during the Svecokarelian orogeny. The widely scattered δ34S and disequilibrium between sulfides indicate bacterial reduction of seawater sulfate. Coordinates read on the map of the publication (Fig. 2), about twenty kilometres west of Pajala; precision of about 10 km.
