Banded iron formationsFe
- Type
- Archaean banded iron formation (3.8 Ga)
One of the oldest known banded iron formations. It was the subject of a pioneering study of iron isotope fractionation, to determine whether Fe2+ oxidation there was biological or abiotic.

| 0.1 / 0.5 ‰ | magnetite Fractionation consistent with transport, oxidation and precipitation of Fe2+ from hydrothermal vents. Its interpretation as a biosignature remains cautious: abiotic photo-oxidation can produce similar fractionation. | Dauphas et al. 2004, Fe isotopes in Isua BIF |
