Iheya North

Middle Okinawa Trough, off Okinawa (Japan), 1000 to 1090 m depth, Mer de Chine orientale

Volcanogenic massive sulfidesZn-Pb-Cu (Ba)

Type
Modern seafloor hydrothermal sulfides (back-arc)

Seafloor hydrothermal field of the incipient Okinawa Trough back-arc basin, on thinned, sediment-covered continental crust. Lead mixes local volcanic and sedimentary lead; zinc mainly comes from the volcanics, with kinetic fractionation during sphalerite precipitation. Sphalerite-rich chimneys with chalcopyrite and pyrite; sphalerite formed at about 243 to 249 °C from its Fe/Zn ratio. Coordinates of the dredged samples.
