East Pacific Rise hydrothermal chimneys at 9°50' N (Bio9'' and K-vent)

East Pacific Rise, 9-10° N, Océan Pacifique (eaux internationales)

Volcanogenic massive sulfidesZn-Cu

Type
Active basalt-hosted seafloor massive sulphides

Active chimneys sampled by the Alvin submersible (dives 4053 and 4057): high-temperature Cu-rich chimney of Bio9'' (383 °C, chalcopyrite and sphalerite-pyrite) and low-temperature Fe-Zn chimney-diffuser of K-vent (203 °C, sphalerite, pyrite, marcasite and galena). Bio9'' sulphides have δ66Zn close to that of the fluid and basalts; K-vent sulphides are heavy because they precipitated from a fluid already enriched in heavy isotopes by subsurface precipitation of light sphalerite, the only fluid supersaturated in sphalerite at the vent according to John et al. (2008). Indicative coordinates (9°50' N segment).
