Broken Hill
Broken Hill Domain, Curnamona Province, New South Wales, Australia
SEDEXPb-Zn-Ag
- Type
- Metamorphosed stratiform Pb-Zn-Ag (Broken Hill type)
World's largest massive sulfide deposit (about 280 to 300 Mt at 10 % Pb, 8.5 % Zn and 148 g/t Ag), 8 km long, in at least six orebodies (C, B and A lodes, 1, 2 and 3 lenses) in the Hores Gneiss (about 1685 Ma). Broken Hill-type deposits in the Palaeoproterozoic Willyama Supergroup, intensely deformed and metamorphosed at granulite facies (about 700 to 800 °C, 5 to 6 kbar) during the Olarian Orogeny. Sphalerite zinc and cadmium, among the most scattered known, point to low-temperature syngenetic deposition with a biogenic component. The sphalerite Zn/Cd ratio (219 to 1189) cannot be used to classify the deposit. Coordinates from the publication.
δ66Zn in ‰ (per mil) Values of the same system
Standard : AA-ETH Zn
| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| −0.1 ± 0.38 ‰ | −1.15 / 0.46 ‰ | 18 | sphalerite Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 18 samples, Table 2. All lenses, including the North mine Zinc lode. The text states 19 analyses, the table gives 18. BH-1 (3 lens) at -1.15 ‰ is the lowest value published for sphalerite; no stratigraphic trend. | Spry et al.
