Software Alternative to Isotopic Traceability Labs | IsoFind
Placing IsoFind · software and lab

The real question isn't IsoFind or Oritain.

It's software or service. Isotopic traceability laboratories run the measurement and return a verdict. IsoFind is the sovereign software that interprets, models and signs your data, on your workstation, whatever the source of the measurement. Two different jobs, often complementary.

The measurement service, and the interpretation software

Conflating the two means comparing things that don't compete. Here is what each one covers.

Service laboratory

You are handed a verdict

You send a physical sample. The laboratory runs the isotopic measurement and compares the result against its reference database, then returns an origin verification.

  • The physical measurement is included, it is the core business.
  • Testing accreditation adds external evidentiary weight.
  • The method and the reference database stay with the provider.
IsoFind, software

You keep control

You work on your own data, whatever its source, on your workstation. IsoFind interprets, couples geochemistry and isotopes, models transport, reconstructs the origin signature and seals everything.

  • Your data never leaves your workstation, air-gap mode available.
  • Transparent method: uncertainty, yield and protocol preserved.
  • Output in the open ISOF format, verifiable by a third party without the software.

Service laboratory and IsoFind software

A read criterion by criterion, to choose by your actual need rather than by category.

Comparison of the two approaches to isotopic traceability.
Criterion Service laboratory IsoFind, software
What you get An origin-verification result, usually tied to a proprietary reference database. The full environment for analysis, modelling and reporting, on your own data.
Physical measurement Included, performed by mass spectrometry. Not performed. IsoFind interprets measurements already obtained, in-house or in a lab.
Where your data lives Sent to the provider, hosting per contract. On your workstation only. No telemetry, air-gap possible.
Interpretation and modelling Depends on the offering, methodology often proprietary. Core of the product: speciation, reactive transport, signature reconstruction, transparent.
Output format Report or certificate in the provider's own format. Open, signed ISOF file, MIT licence, verifiable without IsoFind.
Evidentiary value Testing accreditation possible (measurement). Method traceability and verifiable signature (interpretation), not a testing accreditation.
Cost model Per sample or per campaign. Software licence. Free-for-life Essential edition, annual professional editions.
Best when You need an accredited measurement performed for you. You have, or can obtain, the data and want to interpret it and keep it.

The two are not mutually exclusive. A common workflow is to have the measurement performed by a laboratory, then interpret and seal it in IsoFind.

When a laboratory, when IsoFind

A laboratory is the right choice

  • You have no isotopic measurement instrument in-house.
  • You need an accredited test result, defensible as a measurement.
  • Your matrix falls in a field where the provider has an established reference database.
  • The volume is occasional and does not justify bringing interpretation in-house.

IsoFind is the right choice

  • Your data is sensitive and cannot be sent to a third party.
  • You want to control the method, the uncertainty and the signature reconstruction.
  • You need auditable, recurring reports at zero marginal cost.
  • You work on critical materials, defence or forensics, with a sovereignty requirement.

Most of the time, the answer is not one against the other: the laboratory measures, IsoFind interprets and seals.

Where IsoFind sits among the players

Isotopic traceability brings together different trades. Here is how they divide up.

Origin verification

Origin-forensics laboratories

Players such as Oritain verify product origin from proprietary reference databases, historically in food and textiles, and increasingly on raw materials.

Oritain's network includes Advanced Isotopic Analysis in Pau, Isotrace, Imprint and Agroisolab. It is a service model, with the measurement and the database at the heart of the offering.

Multi-matrix testing

Large testing laboratories

Groups such as Eurofins or Agroisolab offer traceability through isotope-ratio analysis across many matrices, as testing services.

Here too, you hand over the sample and receive a result, with the data and method staying with the provider.

Research tools

Scientific libraries

Packages such as IsoriX, in R, perform geographic assignment from isoscapes. Powerful, but aimed at researchers who code, with no integrated environment and no proof format.

Sovereign software

IsoFind

At the crossroads of these worlds: desktop software that works on your data whatever its source, couples geochemistry and isotopes, reconstructs a signature and produces a signed file, without sending anything out.

Complementary to laboratories rather than competing with them: they measure, IsoFind interprets and seals.

What we're asked about alternatives

Is there a software alternative to Oritain or to isotopic traceability labs?
Oritain, Agroisolab and Eurofins are service laboratories: you send them a sample, they run the measurement and return an origin verification, usually backed by their own proprietary reference database. IsoFind answers a different and complementary need: it is software you run on your own workstation to interpret, model and sign your isotopic data, without sending it to a third party. If you want to keep control of your data and your method, IsoFind is the software alternative. If you need an accredited measurement performed for you, a laboratory remains essential, and the two work together.
Does IsoFind replace an isotope analysis laboratory?
No. IsoFind does not perform the physical measurement by mass spectrometry. It works after the measurement, to interpret ratios, couple isotopes with geochemistry, model transport, reconstruct an origin signature and produce a defensible report. The measurement can come from your own instrument or from a service laboratory; IsoFind works on those results.
Can I use IsoFind with analyses run by a third-party laboratory?
Yes. IsoFind imports data from Excel, CSV or your own scripts, whatever the source. You can therefore use results provided by any laboratory, interpret them in IsoFind, then seal them in the open ISOF format, verifiable by a third party without owning the software.
Is IsoFind ISO 17025 accredited?
No, and that would be a category error: ISO 17025 accreditation applies to testing laboratories that perform measurements, not to interpretation software. IsoFind does not issue a measurement result; it documents the method, preserves uncertainty and purification yield, and produces a verifiable signed file. If your chain requires an accredited measurement, have it performed by an accredited laboratory, then interpret it in IsoFind.
What solution fits CRMA or Battery Regulation compliance?
Compliance combines two building blocks. First, a reliable measurement of the isotopic signature, done in-house or by a laboratory. Second, a traceable interpretation that reconstructs origin and produces an auditable report. IsoFind, notably through its IsoSupply edition, covers this second block while keeping your data on your workstation, which is often a requirement for critical raw materials and defence-related work.
Is there sovereign, offline isotopic traceability software?
Yes, that is exactly IsoFind's positioning: sovereign, offline desktop software, with no telemetry, able to run fully air-gapped. Your data never leaves your workstation, and your files stay readable without IsoFind thanks to the open ISOF format published under the MIT licence.
How does IsoFind's cost compare with a laboratory analysis?
The models differ. A laboratory charges per sample or per campaign. IsoFind is licensed software, with a free-for-life Essential edition and annual professional editions. On a recurring volume of interpretations, the marginal cost of an additional analysis in IsoFind is zero, with the physical measurement billed separately by the laboratory or instrument.
