It's software or service. Isotopic traceability laboratories run the measurement and return a verdict. IsoFind is the sovereign software that interprets, models and signs your data, on your workstation, whatever the source of the measurement. Two different jobs, often complementary.
Conflating the two means comparing things that don't compete. Here is what each one covers.
You send a physical sample. The laboratory runs the isotopic measurement and compares the result against its reference database, then returns an origin verification.
You work on your own data, whatever its source, on your workstation. IsoFind interprets, couples geochemistry and isotopes, models transport, reconstructs the origin signature and seals everything.
A read criterion by criterion, to choose by your actual need rather than by category.
| Criterion | Service laboratory | IsoFind, software |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | An origin-verification result, usually tied to a proprietary reference database. | The full environment for analysis, modelling and reporting, on your own data. |
| Physical measurement | Included, performed by mass spectrometry. | Not performed. IsoFind interprets measurements already obtained, in-house or in a lab. |
| Where your data lives | Sent to the provider, hosting per contract. | On your workstation only. No telemetry, air-gap possible. |
| Interpretation and modelling | Depends on the offering, methodology often proprietary. | Core of the product: speciation, reactive transport, signature reconstruction, transparent. |
| Output format | Report or certificate in the provider's own format. | Open, signed ISOF file, MIT licence, verifiable without IsoFind. |
| Evidentiary value | Testing accreditation possible (measurement). | Method traceability and verifiable signature (interpretation), not a testing accreditation. |
| Cost model | Per sample or per campaign. | Software licence. Free-for-life Essential edition, annual professional editions. |
| Best when | You need an accredited measurement performed for you. | You have, or can obtain, the data and want to interpret it and keep it. |
The two are not mutually exclusive. A common workflow is to have the measurement performed by a laboratory, then interpret and seal it in IsoFind.
Most of the time, the answer is not one against the other: the laboratory measures, IsoFind interprets and seals.
Isotopic traceability brings together different trades. Here is how they divide up.
Players such as Oritain verify product origin from proprietary reference databases, historically in food and textiles, and increasingly on raw materials.
Oritain's network includes Advanced Isotopic Analysis in Pau, Isotrace, Imprint and Agroisolab. It is a service model, with the measurement and the database at the heart of the offering.
Groups such as Eurofins or Agroisolab offer traceability through isotope-ratio analysis across many matrices, as testing services.
Here too, you hand over the sample and receive a result, with the data and method staying with the provider.
Packages such as IsoriX, in R, perform geographic assignment from isoscapes. Powerful, but aimed at researchers who code, with no integrated environment and no proof format.
At the crossroads of these worlds: desktop software that works on your data whatever its source, couples geochemistry and isotopes, reconstructs a signature and produces a signed file, without sending anything out.
Complementary to laboratories rather than competing with them: they measure, IsoFind interprets and seals.

IsoFind brings together several services around isotope geochemistry. The Atlas gathers published values for ore deposits, contaminated sites and fractionation, free to browse, with more than 1,300 reference pages in English and French. The IsoFind software is for working on your own measurements, offline. Free online tools such as the standards conversion and two open formats, ISOF and IGL, complete it. Each page of the site shows only part of this whole: the links below lead to the rest.
