Carbonate sediments of the Yuhuang and Duanqiao fields

Southwest Indian Ridge, segments 27 and 29, Océan Indien (eaux internationales)

Type
Sediment

Carbonate oozes (73 to 92 % CaCO3, 0.5 to 2.1 µg/g Ga) collected around the two hydrothermal fields. Less than 1 % of the Ga sits in the carbonate phase: dissolved seawater gallium taken up by Fe and Mn oxides and hydroxides, hence a δ71Ga heavier than the basalts (+1.22 ‰); the authors infer local seawater between +1.92 and +2.36 ‰ (Zhang et al., 2021). Indicative coordinates (between the two fields).

Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 8 analyses, samples SD-1 to SD-8, heavier than the nearby MORB (+1.20 to +1.23 ‰).
