Honda Bay coastal marine sediments (Palawan)

Palawan, Puerto Princesa (east coast, Sulu Sea), Philippines

Sediments

Type
Sediment

Bay receiving mercury-laden particles eroded from the mine abandoned in 1976, notably by the Tagburos River; 27 surface sediments taken with a grab sampler (very fine sand to mud), 5 of them analysed for isotopes (0.57 to 11.7 mg/kg Hg). Hg(II) dominant in thermal desorption (above 200 °C), minor Hg(I), no Hg(0); isotope signature similar to that of the mine ore and soils: rapid supply of soil particles by floods according to the authors. Indicative coordinates (centre of the bay).
