Salta, southern Puna, northwest of Salar del Hombre Muerto, Argentina

OtherB

Type
Neogene lacustrine borates (borax)

Puna Plateau (central Andes), internally drained basins filled since about 15 Ma; borates deposited since about 8 Ma by volcanism-related thermal springs. One of the largest borax deposits in the world: 30 m massive body between rock salt below and silts and sandstones above, deposited in a small closed lake fed by thermal springs, deformed and compacted; borax with minor kernite, rare ameghinite and rivadavite. Kasemann et al. (2004): mineralizing fluid near -11 ‰ (no solution-borax fractionation at pH 8.8), boron from the Paleozoic basement. Coordinates not published (map only).
