California, Inyo County, Furnace Creek borate district (east of Death Valley), United States

OtherB

Type
Lacustrine borates (zoned), Furnace Creek Formation

Borate deposit of the Furnace Creek Formation (Miocene-Pliocene, extensional Basin and Range basin, over 600 km² between the Funeral and Black Mountains); about thirty borate lenses in calcareous lacustrine sediments, some zoned (probertite or ulexite core surrounded by colemanite), others colemanite-only. Swihart et al. (2014): probertite near +5 ‰, colemanite mostly near -1 ‰, the heavier boron of the Na-Ca core reflecting the ancestral lake and its springs, the lighter colemanite the alteration of Na-Ca borates by downward-migrating lake water. Zoned deposit whose Na-Ca zone was not accessible. Coordinates not published (district map only).
