Ladolam (Lihir Island)

New Ireland, Lihir group (Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni arc), Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée

Epithermal depositsAu

Type
Epithermal and porphyry gold in an alkaline caldera

One of the largest and youngest volcanic-hosted gold deposits (over 40 Moz contained gold), in the post-collisional Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni alkaline arc. McInnes et al. (1999): internal Re-Os isochron of 690 ± 26 ka on sample 101373; ore γOs from +16 to +311, more radiogenic than the metasomatised mantle veins of xenoliths from the nearby Tubaf submarine volcano: part of the Os (and metals) comes from the recycled slab.

Young ore (under 1 Ma): measured ratio close to initial. 101373: biotite basaltic breccia from the Minifie area; 101201: heterolithic breccia from the Lienetz area.
