Hochgrössen

Styria, Hochgrössen massif (linked to the Speik Complex), Austria

Magmatic (Ni-Cu-PGE, carbonatites)Cr (EGP)

Type
Podiform chromitites in an ophiolite

Metamorphosed dunite and harzburgite massif, dismembered mantle relic of an ophiolite (Speik Complex, Eastern Alps), probably Late Proterozoic to Early Paleozoic; podiform chromitites as small layers, lenses and pods (less than 0.5 m thick). Only massif where a pre-Variscan high-pressure (eclogite) metamorphism is recognised; its link to the Speik Complex is debated. Chromitite HG 71, from a large outcrop in the northwest of the massif, is massive with chlorite, Ni arsenide and Ni sulphide inclusions; laurite makes up 75 % of platinum-group minerals (Malitch et al., 2003).
