- Type
- Blackwall emerald in a ductile shear zone at a serpentinite-metapelite contact
Emerald deposit in a regional shear zone between Zentralgneis orthogneiss (314 ± 7 Ma) and the Habach Group (metapelites, metavolcanics, serpentinites), along strike of the Greiner zone. Blackwall sequence from serpentinite towards garnet-mica schist: talc, talc-actinolite, chlorite, biotite, biotite-albite; emerald and tourmaline only on the southeast side, against the metapelites. Alpine metasomatism at 500-550 °C and 450-600 MPa. Trumbull et al. (2009): tourmaline from -13.8 to -5.1 ‰, cores shifting from -14 to -10 ‰ in the country rock to -9 to -5 ‰ in the blackwall, mixing of a crustal metamorphic fluid and a serpentinite-derived fluid.

| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| −11.7 ± 1.5 ‰ | −13.5 / −9.8 ‰ | 4 | tourmaline from the garnet-mica schist country rock (sample 103b) Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 4 analyses, -13.5 to -9.8 (1i -9.8; 2i -13.5; 3c -11.7; 4c -11.7). Most Fe-rich schorl-dravite, F-free; no core-rim isotopic zoning. The abstract goes down to -13.8 ‰, a value missing from Table 2 (electronic appendix). | Trumbull et al. | −11.1 ± 1.6 ‰ | −13.1 / −7.7 ‰ | 9 | tourmaline from the phengite schist of the transition zone (sample M-26) Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 9 analyses, -13.1 to -7.7 (1c -7.7; 2r -10.0; 3r -13.1; 4c -12.3; 5c -10.5; 6r -10.8; 7c -10.8; 8r -12.3; 9c -12.1). Fragment of pre-Alpine whiteschist rich in magnesian phengite, hence the lowest Fe/(Fe+Mg) of the study. | Trumbull et al. (2009), Tourmaline geochemistry and δ11B variations as a guide to fluid-r… |
| −9.4 ± 2.4 ‰ | −12.9 / −6.1 ‰ | 8 | tourmaline from the biotite-muscovite schist of the transition zone (sample AST-2) Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 8 analyses, -12.9 to -6.1 (1r -12.1; 2c -10.3; 3c -9.2; 4c -6.1; 5r -12.9; 6i -7.7; 7i -9.7; 8i -6.9). | Trumbull et al. | −7.7 ± 2 ‰ | −10.3 / −5.1 ‰ | 10 | tourmaline from the blackwall chlorite schist (sample 103a) Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 10 analyses, -10.3 to -5.1 (1r -8.7; 2c -5.8; 3r -9.0; 4c -8.2; 5r -9.0; 6c -5.3; 7r -5.8; 8r -10.3; 9r -9.5; 10c -5.1). Strongest optical, chemical and isotopic zoning (4 ‰), rims lighter than cores. Hourglass sector zoning (appendix B): grain C-T2 at -10.9 and -10.9 ‰ (c+ sector) versus -12.0 and -12.5 ‰ (c-), grain D-T1 at -8.0 and -8.3 ‰ versus -9.3 and -10.1 ‰, a 1.3 to 1.5 ‰ contrast. | Trumbull et al.
