Duanqiao hydrothermal field

Southwest Indian Ridge, segment 27 (50°24′E), Océan Indien (eaux internationales)

Volcanogenic massive sulfidesCu-Zn (Ga)

Type
Ultraslow-ridge seafloor massive sulphides

Ultraslow Southwest Indian Ridge (half-spreading rate 0.7 to 0.9 cm/yr), between the Indomed and Gallieni transform faults. Field found during cruise DY-20 on an axial high with thick crust and active volcanism (about 1700 m deep), activity over about 200 × 125 m; loose mounds and collapsed chimneys of pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite on basalts. Sulphide δ71Ga close to that of the nearby MORB (+1.22 ‰): gallium mainly leached from the basalts, with minor seawater and sediment contributions; the 0.6 ‰ spread among sulphides would reflect rapid precipitation or mixing of generations (Zhang et al., 2021). Indicative coordinates from Duanqiao Hill (IHO gazetteer proposal), next to the field.
