Cemetery (Furnace Creek)

California, Inyo County, Furnace Creek borate district (east of Death Valley), United States

OtherB

Type
Lacustrine borates (zoned), Furnace Creek Formation

Borate deposit of the Furnace Creek Formation (Miocene-Pliocene, extensional Basin and Range basin, over 600 km² between the Funeral and Black Mountains); about thirty borate lenses in calcareous lacustrine sediments, some zoned (probertite or ulexite core surrounded by colemanite), others colemanite-only. Swihart et al. (2014): probertite near +5 ‰, colemanite mostly near -1 ‰, the heavier boron of the Na-Ca core reflecting the ancestral lake and its springs, the lighter colemanite the alteration of Na-Ca borates by downward-migrating lake water. Least deformed zoned lens of the district (thickness/length ratio about 1/10): upper and lower colemanite, mixed interval, probertite core from 182.9 to 236.2 m in drill hole R-101. Coordinates not published (district map only).

−0.5 ± 1.3 ‰−2.2 / 1.3 ‰6colemanite of the upper, lower and marginal zones
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 6 analyses, -2.2 to +1.3 (R-93 157,6 m -0.8; R-94 128,9 m -2.2; R-101 178,9 m +1.3; R-101 182,6 m -1.2; R-101 236,2 m +0.7; R-101 239,0 m -0.5). Upper and lower zones near 0 ‰; mean offset of 4.7 ‰ from the R-101 probertite, 6.5 ‰ for marginal colemanite.

4.8 ± 0.5 ‰4.2 / 5.5 ‰4probertite of the Na-Ca core
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 4 analyses, +4.2 to +5.5 (189,9 m +4.2; 217,6 m +5.5; 234,4 m +4.7; 236,2 m +4.9). Composition of the ancestral lake and its springs early in deposition according to the authors; the 4.2 ‰ offset from colemanite at the lower contact exceeds the calculated equilibrium (1.8 to 2.6 ‰).

3.9 ‰1ulexite of the upper colemanite zone
Single analysis (R-101 178,9 m). Coexists with colemanite at +1.3 ‰ (2.6 ‰ offset, consistent with equilibrium).
