Black Rivers of the Congo central basin (Likouala, Motaba, Alima)
Congo central basin, République du Congo
Rivers and surface water
- Type
- River or surface water
Small right-bank tributaries flowing through wetlands, acidic, poor in suspended matter and very rich in dissolved organic carbon. They supply about 22 ± 10 % of the Congo discharge at their confluence. Indicative coordinates (centre of the basin).

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 ± 0.15 ‰ | −0.14 / 0.16 ‰ | 3 | filtered river water (dissolved silicon) Mean and standard deviation recalculated from the three rivers: Likouala -0.14 ± 0.06 ‰ (pH 4.65, November 1989), Motaba +0.02 ± 0.09 ‰ (November 1988), Alima +0.16 ± 0.18 ‰ (pH 4.98, November 1989, n = 4). The lightest dissolved silicon measured in running waters. The authors attribute it to the dissolution of phytoliths and light clays promoted by organic matter. | Cardinal et al.
