Chahe River (downstream of the Banpo mine)
Guizhou, Dushan County, Banpo mine, China
Rivers and surface water
- Type
- River or surface water
Banpo antimony mine (Guizhou): 26 waters sampled in the Dajiagou Creek, which crosses the waste heaps, in the Chahe River, which receives the processing tailings, and in the Qisha tributary; Sb up to 1427 µg/L and sulfate up to 1926 mg/L. Dissolved sulfate δ34S follows Sb and sulfate in the Chahe (r = 0.68 and 0.89): a tracer of the pollution extent; isotope budget: about 59 % of the sulfur of the lower Chahe comes from the mine (Ning et al., 2011). Neutral to alkaline river; δ34S rises from -1.57 ‰ above the tailings to +3.86 ‰ 10 km downstream, where Sb remains at 182.5 µg/L. Coordinates not published.

| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| −1.25 ± 0.45 ‰ | −1.57 / −0.93 ‰ | 2 | Chahe water upstream of the tailings Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 2 analyses, -1.57 to -0.93 (W12 -1.57; W13 -0.93); 0.4 to 0.9 µg/L Sb: background value. | Ning et al. | 3.17 ± 0.08 ‰ | 3.06 / 3.23 ‰ | 4 | Chahe water below the Dajiagou confluence Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 4 analyses, +3.06 to +3.23 (W19 +3.23; W20 +3.16; W21 +3.06; W22 +3.23); 83 to 198 µg/L Sb; about 65 % mine sulfur. | Ning et al. | 5.82 ‰ | 1 | Chahe water at the Qisha confluence Single analysis; site W25; 93.5 µg/L Sb; high value ascribed to incomplete mixing of the two waters. | Ning et al. (2011), Antimony pollution and sulfur isotope study in the waters of an antim… | |
