Cajarc reservoir on the Lot

Riou Mort basin and Lot valley, Aveyron and Lot, France

Type

The Viviez zinc ore processing plant (Vieille Montagne then Umicore) refined up to 100,000 t of zinc per year (1985) by electrolysis and thermal processing; its tailings, very heavy in zinc, polluted the Riou Mort and then the Lot until extraction stopped in 1987. First large reservoir, about 40 km downstream of the confluence; anthropogenic zinc 81 to 98 %. Indicative coordinates.
