- Type
- Sediment
Sediments mixing Nile silt (εNd about -2.6) and Saharan dust (εNd about -13.8), variably enriched in zircon and Fe-Ti oxides by hydrodynamic sorting (Klaver et al., 2015 and 2021). Box cores at 33.13° N 23.00° E, 32.75° N 29.00° E and 31.88° N 29.41° E; drill-site positions not published in the paper. End-members from regression (Klaver et al., 2021, Table 2): Saharan dust δ49Ti +0.266 (+0.044/-0.024) ‰ and δ94/90Zr +0.037 ‰, Nile sediment δ49Ti +0.153 (+0.015/-0.020) ‰ and δ94/90Zr +0.009 ± 0.010 ‰. Hydrodynamic sorting of Fe-Ti oxides shifts δ49Ti by less than 0.03 ‰ within a group. Vilela et al. (2025): Nile sediments upstream of the delta (Lake Qarun, +0.149 ± 0.019 ‰, 2SE) are already as heavy as the group with the least Saharan dust (+0.172 ± 0.005 ‰); sorting in the delta is therefore not needed to explain these values, contrary to the hypothesis of Klaver et al. (2021).
