Section of organic-rich mudrocks (up to 18 % organic carbon) from the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (55.9 Ma) studied by Dickson et al. (2015) for seawater 187Os/188Os.

187Os/188Os isotope ratio, no unit Values of the same system

Standard : Rapport absolu, sans standard de référence

ValueRangenMineral or matrixSource
0.255 ± 0.0350.23 / 0.2792mudrock below the base of the carbon isotope excursion, initial ratio
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 2 analyses, 0.230 to 0.279 (DZ 9 0.230; DZ 12 0.279). Negative depths of the table, below the base of the carbon isotope excursion. The text says the lower levels were not sampled, but Table S1 lists three below 0 m; DZ 9 and DZ 12 are low (0.230 and 0.279). DZ 13 (initial ratio -0.084, 187Re/188Os 482) is left out: a negative ratio has no physical meaning.

0.355 ± 0.0180.327 / 0.3899mudrock from the base of the carbon isotope excursion upwards, initial ratio
Mean and standard deviation recalculated from 9 analyses, 0.327 to 0.389 (DZ 53 0.327; DZ 54 0.344; DZ 57 0.358; DZ 59 0.349; DZ 61 0.389; DZ 63 0.369; DZ 64 0.363; DZ 65 0.356; DZ 66 0.339). Rise up to 0.389 (DZ 61), consistent with the text. PETM isochron at 0.361 ± 0.020 (50 ± 14 Ma, MSWD 26), all data at 0.394 ± 0.049 (4 ± 18 Ma, MSWD 234).
