Columbia (dissolved osmium)
Columbia basin, United States
Rivers and surface water
- Type
- River or surface water
River quoted by Sharma et al. (1999, Table 1) as a comparison for Himalayan rivers. USGS station at Warrendale (Oregon); basin dominated by the Columbia flood basalts (14 to 17 Ma) (Sharma and Wasserburg, 1997).

| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.72 | 1 | river water (dissolved load) Single analysis: measured 187Os/186Os 11.8 ± 0.6, to be read as a lower limit given the low content; 14.4 after a blank correction scaled on the Mississippi. Dissolved Os 15.0 ± 0.9 fmol/kg. Value found surprising by the authors for a basin draining mostly the Tertiary Columbia basalts. With the normal 186Os/188Os ratio of Table 1 (0.11995), one would get 1.25, 1.73, 1.06 and 1.28 for the Mississippi, Columbia, Connecticut and Vistula. | Sharma & Wasserburg (1997), Osmium in the rivers, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta 61(24):… |
