Lengerich cement plant: cement kiln dust (CKD)

North Rhine-Westphalia, Lengerich (Steinfurt district), Germany

Mine tailings and waste rock

Type
Mine tailings and waste rock

Late-1970s Tl pollution from a cement plant near Lengerich, which added Tl-rich Meggen pyrite roaster calcines to the raw meal as an iron corrective; deposition estimated up to 400 µg/m²/d, leaf necrosis and alopecia in livestock, stopped in 1979. Tl evaporated in the kiln (up to 1450 °C in the charge) recondenses on preheater dust and accumulates there; bypass purges, then without electrostatic precipitators, may have emitted bursts of dust rich in highly mobile Tl (80 % NH4NO3-extractable). Dust at ε205Tl of -0.19, identical to Meggen pyrite (-0.36): no net fractionation, evaporation being quantitative (Kersten et al., 2014). Indicative coordinates (Lengerich town).
