Rosh Pinah flotation tailings dam

Karas, Rosh Pinah, Namibia

Mine tailings and waste rock

Type
Mine tailings and waste rock

Dam of about 60 ha and over 25 m high, 1.5 km south of the flotation plant, the main point source of Tl: its wind-eroded surface feeds nearby soils despite stabilising plantations. Tailings at 13.0 and 26.5 mg/kg Tl, mean ε205Tl of +6.2, dominant Tl(I) (XANES), bound to sulphides and micas; FW2 grain-size fractions range from +3.60 to +14.6, the heaviest unexplained since no Tl(III) was detected; fraction mass balance (30.8 mg/kg, +6.7) consistent with the bulk tailings (Grösslová et al., 2018). Indicative coordinates, derived from profile P1 located 0.1 km north-west of the dam.
