Loess
A very homogeneous wind-blown dust deposit, laid down mainly during glacial periods. Because it mixes dust from vast areas, it serves as an average sample of the upper continental crust.
Composition
Silt rich in quartz, feldspars, micas and carbonates; up to several hundred metres thick on the Chinese Loess Plateau.
