- Gold in quartz-carbonate-sulphide veins along thrust faults
Gold deposit 100 km southeast of Belo Horizonte, mined from the late seventeenth century until mine closure; quartz-carbonate-sulphide veins (mostly arsenopyrite) along thrust faults on the flank of the Mariana anticline, in clastic metasediments of the Batatal and Moeda formations (Minas Supergroup). Three tourmaline types: stratiform tourmalinite (T1), vein selvages (T2) and veins (T3), all Al-rich dravite. Probably Brasiliano (Cambrian) age. Trumbull et al. (2019): delta11B from -17.8 to -7.1 ‰, T1 and T2 identical (hydrothermal), T3 5 ‰ heavier; initial fluid about -11 ‰ at 400 C, crustal boron drawn from the host metasediments.
