Abandoned Palawan mercury mine (Puerto Princesa)

Palawan, Puerto Princesa (Honda Bay catchment), Philippines

Other hydrothermalHg

Type
Mercury (cinnabar)

Mercury mine abandoned in 1976, at about 30 m elevation and 3 km from the shore; eroded cinnabar and waste are carried by rivers, including the Tagburos, to Honda Bay. Ore from a 50 m core taken in 2019: 56.8 mg/kg Hg, δ202Hg -0.95 ‰ and Δ199Hg +0.14 ‰, a signature found in the soils, river and marine sediments of the bay (Samaniego et al., 2026). Coordinates not given.
