Black Forest hydrothermal veins
Black Forest (Baden-Württemberg), Germany
Other hydrothermalCu (Ag, Bi, Co)
- Type
- Hydrothermal copper veins (and Pb-Zn-Ag, Co-Ni-Bi)
About twenty vein-type mines of the Black Forest (Dorothea near Freudenstadt, Königswart, Neubulach, Prosper near Rippoldsau, Friedrich-Christian near Schapbach, Wittichen...). Fresh hypogene sulfides have a narrow copper signature close to 0 ‰; oxidation near the surface spreads it widely between residual sulfides and secondary minerals.
δ65Cu in ‰ (per mil) Values of the same system
Standard : NIST SRM 976
| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| −0.04 ± 0.3 ‰ | −0.97 / 0.44 ‰ | 27 | fresh primary sulfides (chalcopyrite, fahlore, emplectite) Mean and standard deviation of 27 fresh samples. Unaltered hypogene sulfides stay close to 0 ‰. | Markl et al. (2006), Copper isotopes as monitors of redox processes in hydrothermal miner… |
| −1.22 ± 0.83 ‰ | −2.85 / −0.04 ‰ | 21 | partly oxidised primary sulfides Mean and standard deviation of 21 samples. Oxidation leaves a residual sulfide depleted in 65Cu. | Markl et al. (2006), Copper isotopes as monitors of redox processes in hydrothermal miner… |
| 0.69 ± 0.97 ‰ | −1.72 / 2.42 ‰ | 30 | secondary copper minerals (malachite, azurite, cuprite, native copper, olivenite...) Mean and standard deviation of 30 samples. Secondary minerals cover a wide range, from -1.7 to +2.4 ‰, depending on oxidation and reprecipitation steps. | Markl et al.
