Mass-dependent and mass-independent fractionation (MDF, MIF)

Most fractionations depend on isotope mass (MDF): the shifts follow each other from one isotope to the next in predictable proportions. Some processes, such as sulfur photochemistry in an oxygen-free atmosphere or mercury photochemistry, depart from this (MIF) and leave a very distinctive signature.
