Batu Hijau
Sumbawa (Lesser Sunda Islands), Indonesia
PorphyriesCu-Au (Mo)
- Type
- Island-arc Cu-Au porphyry
Discovered in 1990 and mined by Newmont, then by Amman Mineral since 2016, with reserves of about 3.4 Mt of copper and 4.5 million ounces of gold. Mineralisation, about 3.7 Ma old (Pliocene), lies in subduction-related calc-alkaline dacite and tonalite intrusions, with a marginal skarn. The main minerals are chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite and pyrite.
δ34S in ‰ (per mil) Values of the same system
Standard : V-CDT
| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.1 / 1.7 ‰ | skarn sulfides (chalcopyrite, pyrite) A narrow, positive range characteristic of a single magmatic source. The skarn and the porphyry share the same sulfur signature. | Garwin 2002, The geologic setting of intrusion-related hydrothermal systems near the Batu… | ||
| 0.1 / 1.4 ‰ | porphyry sulfides (chalcopyrite, bornite, pyrite) The porphyry signature is indistinguishable from that of the associated skarn, confirming a common magmatic source. | Garwin 2002, Batu Hijau porphyry copper-gold deposit | ||
| 10 / 15 ‰ | sulfates (porphyry anhydrite) Magmatic sulfate in equilibrium with sulfide of the same paragenesis, with a sulfate-sulfide Δ of about 10 to 14 ‰, consistent with high-temperature equilibrium (about 450 to 550 °C). | Garwin 2002, Batu Hijau porphyry copper-gold deposit |
δ56Fe in ‰ (per mil) Values of the same system
Standard : IRMM-014
| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| −0.48 / 0.34 ‰ | pyrite (hydrothermal veins) Strong variability, anticorrelated with the δ56Fe of coexisting chalcopyrite. It is interpreted as reflecting fractionation between the FeS pathway and the pyrite-fluid pathway as the reaction progresses. Coupling iron and sulfur makes it possible to follow sulfidation processes. | Asmoro et al. 2017, Iron-isotope systematics from the Batu Hijau Cu-Au deposit, Chemical … |
207Pb/204Pb isotope ratio, no unit Values of the same system
Standard : NIST SRM 981
| Value | Range | n | Mineral or matrix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15.576 / 19.025 | sulfides (chalcopyrite, bornite) Lead range of the sulfides, reflecting the heterogeneity of crustal sources mixed into the arc magma. More radiogenic than the typical oceanic arc average, suggesting subduction-related crustal contamination. | Batu Hijau porphyry copper-gold deposit, Sumbawa Island, Indonesia (2008) |
